Week 2:
This week I tried a morning "wake up" class. The point of it was to energize and prepare your body and mind to take on the day. I felt this class was easier than the last one I did because, for one it was shorter, and two it really focused on slow big breathing and long flowing stretches, which she called sun salutations. This class to me seemed to involve a lot of meditation. She encouraged us to keep our eyes closed if we could and really just breathe and stretch.
My take away from this class was that it was really enjoyable. I plan on doing a routine similar to this on my own every morning. I truly felt energized after. I usually do a mix of static stretching and foam rolling in the morning because it helps my mobility for weight lifting, but this loosened me up and stretched me way better than that. I still plan to use a foam roaller and stretch from time to time, but i think my morning routine is going to switch to a primarilly yoga based one.

Week 5

This week I practiced Ashtanga yoga and it kicked my butt. An instructor came into our class and took us partway through the first series of Ashtanga yoga to help us get a feel for that form of practice. I enjoyed it. The practice was very physically demanding and the position our instructor has mastered was down right impressive. I can’t even imagine being able to contort myself into the shapes she could get into. With that being said, not only were the poses different from many yoga classes but the way she ran it and the things she emphasized and said were a little different too. She was big on doing the positions and doing them correctly. She didn’t want anyone to do them kind of how she said; she wanted them to do it exactly how she said. She also focused heavily on stretching for five whole breaths every time you did a pose. You breathe in for five seconds, exhale for five seconds, and repeat that five times. She also talked a lot about strengthening. This class wasn’t just abo...

The Yoga Experience: week 1

Week 1/14:             Today was my first experience doing yoga. I’ve had no experience with this exercise type but I’ve always been interested in it. I love weight lifting, but it unfortunately puts a lot of wear and tear on my body. With that being said I felt like yoga would help me increase my mobility and recovery. What I was not expecting was just how hard my class would be and just how stiff and non-flexible I truly am.              The class I took was called “flow” and it’s a Vinyasa class they offer at my work lifetime fitness. I figured this would be a good class to start with since its one of the most popular styles here in the U.S.. The class seemed very smooth and was much more difficult than expected. It was hard for me to get into many poses and hold them for the length they wanted. Overall I enjoyed it and am excited to try and get better at it.

Week 8

This week I did a Vinyasa flow class. It’s probably the most popular class at my gym back home. It’s most similar to Ashtanga because it is very sequenced, and focused on breathing. We started out with sun salutations they called their Vinyasa. It was a sequence of planks, chaturanga, and upward facing dog.   The instructor kind of set the pace, but then let us preform it on our own. After the salutations we moved into more complex sequences that the instructor took us through. She kept reiterating breathing and being efficient. The whole class seemed like a commercialized ashtanga, but I think I liked it just as much as our in class practices. It was challenging but laid back at the same time. The tempo was easy to keep up with, and the poses had beginner poses if you couldn’t do the real one.
